Transforming True Blood: Season 4 Episode 2

Differences Between the Book and Show

Season 4 Episode 2

 Andy Bellefleur

True Blood

Andy uses a warrant to search Hot Shot for vampire blood known as the drug V.  He takes a vile of blood with him and makes no arrest.  The blood is clearly for his use only.

Book

Andy is never hooked on the drug, V.

Bill Compton

True Blood

Bill’s new love interests is a witch named Katerina Pellham.

Book

Bill doesn’t date Katerina in the books.  The next person he dates is Selah Pumfrey, a human real estate agent.    In fact other than Sookie he only has three love interests so far in the books: Lorena Ball, Selah Pumfrey and Judith Vardamon.

True Blood

Bill is living the good life.  His house and his clothes are very ritzy.

Book

Bill makes modifications to his house, but he never shows off his wealth in that way.

True Blood

We get a glimpse into what Bill’s life was like when he was hunting alone without his maker, Lorena.  In the 1980’s Bill we see Bill dressed like a punk rocker who hunts and drinks off a bartender but doesn’t kill him.

Book

In the books Bill had time apart form Lorena and wanted to mainstream.  However we don’t get a back story or a glimpse of how he behaved in this time period.

True Blood

Due to Bill’s effort to mainstream with normal humans, he gains the interest of Nan Flanagan a spokesperson for the American Vampire League.  She tells him about the research on making true blood the synthetic blood that will help mainstream all vampires.  She enlists Bill to spy on the royals who will not want to mainstream with humans.

Book

Bill was working for Sophie-Anne Leclerq, the vampire Queen of Louisiana.  His main job was to convince Sookie to work for the queen.

True Blood

Bill kills Queen Sophie-Anne with the help of a squad of men carrying guns filled with wooden bullets with silver in middle.

Book

Queen Sophie-Anne is not killed until the book, From Dead to Worse.  She is killed by the men working for, Felipe de Castro, the vampire king of Nevada.

True Blood

Bill makes Eric do a job for him because he is the King of Louisiana.

Book

Eric outranks Bill by being the sheriff of Area Five.

True Blood

Bill lies to Nan Flanagan to cover up Sookie’s powers and the fact that Sookie is part fairy.

Book

Nan Flanagan is not a character in the book so this did not happen.

Eric

True Blood

Eric had built himself a daylight retreat in her house.

Book

Bill had built a trap door in one of the closets so he would have a place to stay at Sookie’s house in the day time.

Felton Norris

True Blood

Felton hides from Andy Bellefleur because he is in trouble with the law.

Book

Felton doesn’t get involved with V or taking away Crystal from Hot Shot, so he isn’t in trouble with the law until they find out he kidnapped Jason.

Jessica Hamby and Hoyt Fortenberry

True Blood

Hoyt puts himself in harms way by publicly defending his girlfriend and the rights of vampires.

Book

So far this hasn’t happens in the books.

True Blood

Eric confronts the coven of witches.  He demands that they disband their coven, because the magic they are practicing is dangerous for Vampires.  When the witch tries to start a spell with the coven, Eric attacks her and starts to drink from her neck.  After Eric attacks Tara who was trying to help, Lafayette decides to help with the spell.

Book

One of the witches has a meeting with Eric.  She demands money and for him to please the covens leader, Hollow, sexually for a week.  The witch then casts a spell that seems to be the same as the television show.

True Blood

Crystal and Felton kidnapped Jason so they can turn him into a werepanther.  Felton wants Jason to impregnate Crystal because Felton can’t.

Book

Felton was jealous of Jason going on a date with Crystal.  Crystal was trying to get pregnant by a normal human because all the werepanather’s were becoming infertile due to inbreeding.  He kidnaps Jason to turn him in to a werepanther.  He believes the only reason Crystal likes him is because he isn’t a werepanther.  He hopes that if he turns him into a werepanther, Crystal will lose interest in Jason.

Luna Garza

True Blood

Luna is becoming more of a main character.

Book

Luna is a minor character that Sookie meets in Texas in the book, Living Dead in Dallas

True Blood

Luna is a shifter.  She can turn into not only animals but also her own mother.

Book

Based on the clues in the book, Luna prefers the shape of a bat.

True Blood

Luna may be what she calls a skin walker.  She describes a skin walker as an evil witch that uses their powers to turn themselves in to any animal including humans.  Through folklore her family told her you can only become a skin walker when a shifter kills another family member who is also a shifter.  Luna’s mother had died at childbirth, so this might have made her a skin walker.

Book

So far there are no skin walkers in the books.

Sam Merlotte

True Blood

Sam is clearly trying to start some kind of romantic relationship with Luna Garza.

Book

Luna is a minor character that Sookie meets in Texas in the book, Living Dead in Dallas.  For that reason Sam hasn’t met her yet.

True Blood

Sam said he would have made it past the 9th grade-if there was someone as pretty at Luna for a teacher

Book

He had a good loving family and stayed with his parents as a child.  There is no evidence that he didn’t finish high school.

Sookie Stackhouse

True Blood

Sookie asks for help from both Pam and Bill to convince Eric to give her back ownership of her house and leave her alone.

Book

Sookie does not ask for help from either Pam or Bill to keep Eric from owning her home.  Eric does help her with rebuilding parts of her home for side jobs, but he doesn’t own any part of her home so far in the books.

I would love to hear how you feel about the changes.  Are there any changes the show made that you wished happened in the book?  Are there any changes you hated?
