Transforming True Blood

By Megan Nafke

It amazes me how much the show has differed from the storylines in the book.  Some of the changes I have really loved, like how Jason character has grown from a selfish boy to a caring adult.   In fact, I didn’t like him in the books until recently.  There are some changes I don’t like at all.  I loved the sweet natured girl that Tara was in the books.  She had a horrible childhood, but she managed to grow up and own her own shop and have a family with JB.  In the show, I don’t like how negative and aggressive she is.  She is just so loving in the books, and yet in the show she pushes people away sometimes for no reason.  I would like her character more if they gave her another name. I don’t see a reason for changing a character that much.  But that’s just me.

After watching the first two episodes in season 4 I decided to start listing the changes the show is making after viewing each one again.

I would love to hear how you feel about the changes.  Are there any changes the show made that you wished happened in the book?  Are there any changes you hated?

Differences between the book and show

Season 4 episode one

Andy Bellefleur

True Blood

Andy gets hooked on the Vampire Blood.

Book

This doesn’t happen.

Bill Compton

True Blood

Bill doesn’t leave town.

Book

Bill leaves for a research trip to Peru.

True Blood

Bill is the Vampire King of Louisiana.

Book

Bill is not the Vampire King of Louisiana.

True Blood

Bill plays a bigger role in the show than in the book.  For example, Bill gives Sookie an alibi for her time in the Fairy Realm in the show but not the book

Book

Bill plays a minor role in the book.

Claudine Crane

True Blood

Claudine takes Sookie to the Fairy Realm.

Book

Claudine never tries to take Sookie to the Fairy Realm.

True Blood

Claudine leads Sookie into a trap to be harvested by the fairies in the Fairy Realm.

Book

Claudine never tries to lead Sookie into a trap.  In fact Claudine is one of the people who try to protect her from fairies that want to do her harm in later books.

Earl Stackhouse

True Blood

Sookie’s and Jason’s biological grandfather is Adel’s husband, Earl.

Book

Sookie’s and Jason’s grandfather is Fintan.  Her grandmother Adele had an affair with Fintan who was part fairy.

True Blood

Earl is part fairy.

Book

Earl is not part fairy.

True Blood

Earl is alive.  He had unknowingly abandoned the children when he lost track of time in the Fairy Realm.

Book

Neither of her “grandfathers” had lost time in the Fairy Realm nor unknowingly abandoned them.  Grandfather Fintan knew about Jason and Sookie and deliberately stayed away.  Grandfather Earl died when Sookie was young.

Eric

True Blood

Eric buys her a house.

Book

Eric doesn’t buy her a house.

Jessica Hamby and Hoyt Fortenberry

True Blood

Jessica and Hoyt live together.  They experience relationship troubles at home and Jessica is having urges to drink from other men.

Book

Jessica is a character created by the show so none of this ever happened.

Jason Stackhouse

True Blood

Jason matures much faster.  He truly cares for Sookie.  In this episode Jason is now being portrayed as: caring, protective, responsible and unselfish.

Book

In the book, Dead to the World, which the season is based on, Jason, has only begun to change his selfish womanizing ways.

True Blood

Jason truly cares for Sookie in this episode.  He doesn’t yell at her for being missing instead he’s just happy she’s home.  He acts and talks sweetly to his sister.

Book

Jason is starting to build a relationship with his sister.  He comes to her aid when he finds vampires in his home.  (When Eric first starts to live with Sookie.)  He even helps her earn money for keeping him.  But he still has far to go in building a true loving relationship.

True Blood

Jason protects the town of Hot Shot.  He brings them food and supplies and tries to help them in anyway he can.

Book

Jason does learn about Hot Shot in the book, Dead to the World, but only after being kidnapped.  Also, he does care about Hot Shot but not until much later.    He doesn’t become the leader or protector of Hot Shot.

True Blood

Jason still pines for Crystal.  He is a one woman man now.

Book

Jason is still a ladies man in the book Dead to the world.

True Blood

Jason is a police officer.  Not only that, he seems to be taking charge over Andy Bellefleur, who is clearly hooked on vampire blood.

Book

Jason is not a police officer.

Mikey Bellefleur

True Blood

Mikey is a fresh new character, and a new intriguing story line, is the baby evil?

Book

No baby in the books.

Sam Merlotte

True Blood

He has become very aggressive.  It is shown in how he has treated his brother and talking about anger with his group of shifter friends.

Book

He is very sweet in the books.  He only becomes aggressive if it’s in self defense or defense of others.  He is also more of a loner with the shifting community.

Sookie Stackhouse

True Blood

Sookie meets Claudine and she takes her to the Fairy Realm

Book

Sookie does meet Claudine and learn about fairies in the book.  However, she doesn’t go to the Fairy Realm.

True Blood

Sookie’s grandfather Earl saves Sookie by forcing her to jump with him into the portal from the Fairy Realm back to our Realm.

Book

Sookie doesn’t get saved by her grandfather in the book.

True Blood

Sookie loses a year and half of her life in the Fairy Realm.

Book

It never happens.

True Blood

Barry and Sookie are both telepaths and fairies.  When Sookie uses her telepathy all the fairies hear.  It appears that being part fairy is the reason Sookie is a telepath.

Book

The reason some people have telepathy is not yet explained in the books.  It doesn’t appear that all fairies are telepaths.

Tara Thornton

True Blood

Tara is a cage fighter.

Book

Tara runs a clothing shop, Tara’s Togs.

True Blood

Tara has a girlfriend.  She is now either bisexual or a lesbian.

Book

She is heterosexual and ends up marrying JB du Rone.

True Blood

Tara is an independent girl with a temper who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Book

Tara is a sweet girl who has a steady job and roots in the community.
